How's the food there? I don't eat fast food and cook most of my meals myself, but it seems like over there I could afford to eat out more and spend money in the local community. I haven't heard of anyone going out for Filipino food or making Filipino food here.
Edit: I'm not talking about American food. I'm not interested in burgers and the like, I mean the local food.
Local Filipino food isn't good. I prefer the franchise restaurants in the malls.
You have to pick what you like from the Filipino menu. Grilled or barbecue chicken is tasty. Pizza and sandwiches are bad because of the cheap ingredients. The best thing is to buy the ingredients yourself and cook
The Philippines isn't known for its food. I'm not trying to put it down, it's just an unfortunate result of culture and economy. The global Filipino population and the Italian population are about the same, yet apart from Jollibee it's hard to find Filipino restaurants. Recognition may be one factor, but I think taste and quality are far more decisive. The food is just not good. I don't enjoy saying it, but sometimes it can be downright disgusting. I'm talking about not caring enough to the point that there are pig hairs in the soup. Not once, twice, or three times, but countless times. Until the Philippines wakes up and cares about quality more than making money, it will only produce inferior products.
It depends on which cuisine you compare it to. Not many dishes can compare with Italian or Japanese food. The unfortunate thing is that it's hard to find truly authentic restaurants. The food here is very oily and greasy, like everything is fried. It's not healthy cooking. Almost everything is also sweetened or loaded with sugar. You can see the result in how many people here struggle with obesity.
