How is Mindanao?
I'm going to the Philippines for the first time. I'm heading to Cagayan de Oro (CDO) to meet a woman who lives there. My parents think I'm crazy, and they're really worried about my safety because most of Mindanao is under a travel advisory. Are they overreacting? I'm a cautious person by nature, so I wasn't worried. If anyone has traveled around Mindanao a lot, I'd appreciate any advice.
CDO is really great. Tell her I said hi and that I miss her.
When I was active duty, vacationing anywhere in Mindanao was prohibited. The only way to be in Mindanao was on assignments like joint training with the Philippine military. Of course places like CDO and Davao are fine, but there's a reason the risk levels are set the way they are. On the flip side, other countries also issue travel advisories telling their citizens to be careful when visiting the U.S., so keep that in mind.
I'm Filipino American. My mom is from Mindanao. You'll be fine. Just always be aware of your surroundings. Stop every now and then and look around, and notice when people are staring. Most of the time they're just curious, but doing that sends a silent signal that you're not someone who's oblivious to what's going on around them. Don't show your money situation. Never, ever tell anyone how much money you have or how much you brought to the Philippines. Not anyone. It will save you from a lot of real headaches. Also, spend conservatively and don't flaunt it. Try telling your girlfriend now and then, 'the budget is tight.' It's a good test of someone's character. There are a lot of freeloaders in the Philippines. Overall, you'll have a great time. Just don't trust too easily. It's okay to be careful. Enjoy the adventure.
CDO is fine, I lived there for 8 years.
