A cricket ball hurts like hell when it hits you.

The batter is facing a fast bowler with no leg pads and no helmet. So it's definitely a rubber/soft ball, not a seam (hard) ball. And the fielder didn't get hurt either. At least not physically.

Counterpoint: I don't see the fielder getting up after being hit. Conclusion: the ball killed him instantly.

Any cricket lawyers here who can confirm whether this is allowed and whether the batter is actually out?

Yep, it's allowed. As long as the ball didn't touch the ground, it's fine.
