I'm planning my first trip to the Philippines from the US East Coast. Where is the best place to buy plane tickets? There are so many places selling tickets, and the price differences are huge.

Booking directly with the airline

Book directly with the airline. If something goes wrong, it's easier to call them right away. Third-party agencies often aren't open 24 hours, so it can be hard to get through to them. I've had bad experiences with travel agencies and online booking sites, so I always book directly. When you book directly, the airline also notifies you immediately by email or text about delays, cancellations, upgrades, and so on.

I start with a fare comparison site. It sends you to the site with the 10 cheapest fares. Also, depart on a Tuesday or Wednesday and return on a Tuesday or Wednesday. I fly from Dallas (DFW) on Korean Air via Seoul to Manila. Round trip is $776, departing November 24 and returning December 16. Foreign airlines usually let you check two bags, but American airlines only allow one. Don't take a return flight around federal holidays. Departing before a holiday is usually fine.

Tip: I'm old 🤣. Long-haul flights don't work for me anymore. LA to Manila is 14.5 hours (ouch!). So I go to Seattle first (4 hours from the east coast), then Tokyo (10 hours 15 minutes), then Manila (4.5 hours). The layovers are long enough that I can get out and stretch.
