Hi everyone, I'd like to ask if there are any Filipinas here in a similar situation to mine. Has anyone gotten married in the US but never reported the marriage to the Philippines or updated their PSA marriage record?
I'm a Filipina who has been married to an American for 12 years, and I never registered our marriage in the Philippines. Honestly, I did it to protect myself. You really never know what the future holds. Things may be fine between us now, but what if someday things change or we fall out?
I lived in the US with my husband for eight years. Then, because the cost of living there was too high, we agreed that I would move back to the Philippines. Since my husband wouldn't let me work while I was there anyway, I was all the more willing to come home.
Honestly, the change was really hard for me. In the Philippines I was a workaholic and very independent. But in America I became isolated and financially dependent on my husband. I was unhappy because I felt I'd lost the freedom to work, earn my own money and help with expenses.
Now I'm back in the Philippines and I've already given up my green card. My husband plans to retire here eventually.
The real reason I never reported our marriage is fear, and what I went through emotionally during those years. Heaven forbid, but if we ever separated, I was afraid I wouldn't have the money to protect myself or pay for the legal process.
Some people may ask why I made that decision. But at the time, I felt I absolutely needed some kind of security and independence for myself.
I'm not asking to be judged. I just want to hear from other Filipinas who've been in the same situation, married abroad but never reported the marriage or updated their PSA records.

Don't report it, you got married in the US... The problem is, if you fall out with your husband in the US, here in the Philippines you'd have to go through an annulment, which can be very expensive and take a long time... so leave it as is until then...
Did he ask you to give up your green card? A man who's been married five times, has kept you from working for the past 12 years and is 25 years older than you is actually an abuser. What exactly are you getting out of a marriage like that? Honestly, sometimes I think it's better to be single than to put yourself in that kind of mess
Not reporting your US marriage to the PSA doesn't make you legally single. Leaving it unreported doesn't change the validity of the marriage. One practical reason to report it is to get the marriage record you'd need if you want to change your Philippine passport to your married surname. Another is your husband's planned retirement in the Philippines. Having the marriage recorded with the PSA can help with the paperwork for a 13(a) spousal visa. For balikbayan entry, your husband has to travel with you as a qualifying balikbayan and have proof of marriage. The published balikbayan requirements don't specifically call for a PSA marriage record.
Legally: I think you're supposed to report it to the PSA. Also, why didn't you work while you were in the US? You could have earned SS after 40 quarters, or 10 years. Why you never became a citizen after 3 years and then reacquired Filipino citizenship to become a “dual citizen” is beyond me. Looks like a lot of mistakes, and giving up the green card is another one.
Man, so many people here sound like they're just planning to divorce or find someone new in whatever country. There seems to be no trust in those relationships. Thank God I'm not married to any of you!
There's a 25-year age gap between my husband and me. If I'd planned to leave him while I was in America, I could easily have done it. But I didn't, because I love him. Honestly, if I'd had plans to leave, I wouldn't have stayed with him for eight years in America. Think about it: I had no job, no money, and depended on him for everything. If I'd really wanted to run away, I could have asked my relatives in America for help. I had people to turn to, but I never did. I stayed because I respected my husband and couldn't bring myself to leave him. I also didn't give up my green card for some hidden or selfish motive. Being able to live in America was a huge opportunity for me, and I know many people would have done anything to keep it. But I gave it up willingly because my husband wanted me to stay in the Philippines while he worked in America. He plans to retire here eventually. If I were selfish, I wouldn't have gone along with his decision. Of course, giving that up wasn't easy. But I realized that being close to my family and having peace of mind matter more to me. I didn't want to end up depressed and unhappy just because I was living abroad. Some people here are being very judgmental, especially about why I wasn't allowed to work. My husband is the jealous type, and yes, I know that can be hard. I'm also his fifth wife, and honestly, we're already lucky to have lasted 12 years when his previous marriages only lasted one or two. 😅 Anyway, my point is that I'm not waiting for something to happen to my husband or hoping to get something out of him. God forbid. I'm not after his assets either; honestly, he doesn't have much to leave behind. I simply want to protect myself. If something happens down the road and he leaves me, I don't want to be completely unprepared for the stress and cost of legal proceedings. As we all know, legal matters are extremely expensive here in the Philippines, especially since Philippine law has no divorce. I saw what my friend went through. She had an American husband, and after they separated she was under so much stress from the legal costs. Even getting their divorce recognized here in the Philippines cost a fortune. And honestly, I have no plans to go abroad again. I'm happier here in the Philippines near my family. I've realized I don't need to live in America or live in luxury to be happy. I'm fine with a simple life. For me, as long as life is peaceful and stress-free and I'm free to live the way I want, that's enough. Being close to family and having peace of mind mean more to me now than living abroad. My goal is actually very simple. I just want to be a good wife, take care of my husband, love him and live peacefully with him. I'm not trying to build an empire, invest in property or…
