Do I really need a return (onward) ticket?

If I buy a round-trip ticket that returns 45 days later, do I still need a separate onward ticket that leaves within 30 days of arrival?

Before, I didn't know exactly when I would leave, so I always bought a one-way ticket along with a disposable exit ticket. This time I want to save some money by buying a round-trip ticket instead.

If the return date is later than 30 days after arriving in the Philippines, will I be stopped at the airport?

I'd feel better buying a cheap $7 throwaway ticket.

The airline confirmed it.

I've never been checked by customs, but airlines check it often.

I flew Philippine Airlines on a round trip returning 59 days after arrival and had no problems. Immigration in the Philippines didn't ask me anything either. I can't guarantee it will be the same for you, though.

It depends on the airline. Immigration officers rarely ask for it, especially if you have a long history of entering the country. Philippine airlines do require it, and without a ticket within 30 days they will either refuse boarding or make you buy an outbound ticket.
