DepEd Orders Suspension of All In-Person and Home-Based Academic Activities When Temperatures Reach 42°C
Education Secretary Sonny Angara has issued comprehensive school guidelines to prepare for the threat of a Super El Niño. For the safety of students and teachers, all in-person and home-based academic activities must be suspended when the ambient temperature reaches 42 degrees Celsius.
"We can't afford to wait until extreme heat hits. Our plan this year is proactive, careful, and systematic," he said.

I get it, and it's the right call for the kids' safety, but it's kind of sad. The education system is already a mess, and now there are even fewer days to learn.
So suspending classes is fine, but improving school facilities isn't?? With how big the Philippines' annual budget is?? In Bangkok, every school I've visited had air conditioning. They adapt to their country's geography. It's a tropical climate, so of course it's hot, but here there's literally nothing, my god. It's because they want lots of bobotantes (dumb voters), that's why it's like this.
My kid started kindergarten this year and the number of times school gets canceled or ends early is unbelievable. They suspend classes just because rain is forecast, and then it doesn't even rain. They also suspend classes for teachers' meetings. Can't the meetings be held outside class hours? Sometimes the teacher cancels class or ends early saying they have somewhere to go. Seriously??? Then a few hours before class starts, we get messages saying there's homework to do. It's endlessly annoying and this is still kindergarten.
Damn it, who wrote this article, I want to crush them 42°C is the HEAT INDEX, not the AMBIENT TEMPERATURE. If the ambient temperature actually hit 42°C, we'd all be Andoks grilled beef. The heat index factors in humidity, so it's higher than the actual temperature. A dry 35°C is no problem at all. A humid 33°C feels like a siopao left in the 7/11 steamer. They even linked the memo (official document). All they had to do was read it and fact-check what the politician said, but they pulled a very important detail out as the headline caption and didn't even do that. I swear journalists in this country need an intro course in science and risk communication. I respect what you do overall, but on this particular job I don't think you do it well enough to actually help the public.
