Does anyone here have a good relationship with, or is married to, a Filipina who strongly believes in superstitions and conspiracy theories?
I just found out that my girlfriend of two months is an anti-vaxxer (and she may have other conspiracy beliefs too). She's also deeply superstitious, which I knew from the start. She believes witches fly and have superhuman strength, that witches turn into cats or dogs, that long-tongued monsters kill people and babies, that there are other monsters like the Wak-wak and Aswang, and she believes in curses like "barang" and in amulets, and it goes on and on. Can this relationship be saved?
We live together, and I figured that once she was away from the environment that taught her these things, she'd slowly start listening to common sense and reason over time. But now that I know she's also a conspiracy theorist, I'm not sure. Conspiracy theorists don't listen to rational arguments, they reject evidence, and they don't trust experts in any field.
She was born, raised, and has lived in a small province. I don't know if that makes a difference.
Does anyone here have a good marriage with a Filipina who holds these kinds of beliefs?
Don't marry someone with unspoken expectations like 'they'll change eventually.' That's exactly how marriages fall apart. You have to take the person as they are now, not as who you hope they'll become. It doesn't matter whether she's Filipina or from any other country. If your core values are fundamentally different, the relationship will always be a struggle, and it's hard for it to last unless both of you try to compromise or one of you genuinely changes their beliefs.
There are plenty of foreigners here who are anti-vax too. In my experience, Filipino women all believe in aswang to some degree. If you ask a Filipino whether they believe in, say, wak wak, they'll say no, but keep digging and they'll say 'tabi tabi po' every time they pee in the woods, and after coming back from a funeral they'll change clothes before going home. We're not free from superstition either. I'm pro-vaccine, an atheist, and a science person, but I still feel uneasy when a black cat crosses my path. It does feel like you two live in different universes, but I wish you the best with your girlfriend.
Some conspiracy theories turn out to be true, lol
If you're asking Reddit for advice because something bothers you in a relationship that's only two months old, that doesn't seem like a good sign, bro. And don't start living together after two months with the next one.
