I recently moved into an old building, and I paid a bit of money to have a skilled technician take down the air conditioner the building had installed and clean it. Watching it was shocking. Years' worth of foul stench came pouring out. Once you've seen it, you can't unsee it,
It was like a beheading scene. Is this why I often get sick for days after staying at a hotel here? But c
Maintenance and Filipino aren't synonyms.
Right. I stay in the Philippines for long stretches twice a year, and every time I go my nose and throat get sore and my nose runs. I think it's the dirty air conditioners.
If you live in a hotel, it's easy to clean yourself. Turn it off with the remote, and if possible switch it off at the wall switch or breaker too. Take out the filter. For a wall-mounted split unit, lift the front panel and slide out the mesh filter; for a window unit, the filter is usually behind the front grille. Wash the filter in lukewarm water in the shower or sink with a little soap or shampoo. Rinse from the back side so the dust flushes out the way it came in. Let it dry completely before putting it back (wipe with a towel, then air dry for 20-30 minutes). A wet filter grows mold. Wipe the louvers and the outer casing with a damp cloth or tissue. An old toothbrush helps with the vents. If there's dust on the fins behind the filter, gently brush it off. The fins bend easily, so go carefully along the direction of the fins, and don't spray water on them. After reassembling, run it in fan mode for 10 minutes before turning on the cooling.
Oh my god, I thought I'd moved into a drug den.
