It's kind of funny how people act shocked when I say I'm bringing $600 or $1,000 in cash to the Philippines. What on earth do these people travel with?

I carry several smartphones worth over $1,000 each, plus a laptop worth thousands of dollars. Cash is probably the least valuable thing I have on me.

Sometimes I read those comments and wonder if we're even talking about the same Philippines. They talk like it's some dangerous part of South America.

I've traveled all over South America, Africa, Mexico, and Southeast Asia. Keeping track of $600 or $1,000 in cash is way down the list of things I worry about when I travel.

I always carry cash. It's my emergency escape hatch wherever I am. If someone takes my cards, phone, and laptop, I'm in big trouble like most people. It's not that hard to hide a thousand or two thousand dollars.

It might come down to comfort level and lack of experience traveling abroad. I usually bring several ATM cards and only carry two days' worth of cash to exchange into local currency. Many people don't realize that banks have a hard time accepting bills unless they're very clean.

You don't need to tell us how rich you are. We're not going to sleep with you, sorry. Go to a dating site. They'll love hearing about expensive gadgets.

These people must have never heard of ATMs. They're everywhere, so there's no need to carry dollars around.
