I'd really appreciate it if you could take a moment to answer this. I visited the Philippines twice briefly in 1983, and I believe I entered through Clark. But when I went back recently, Angeles was completely different from what I remembered. As I recall, I walked out of the base and within a few hundred feet crossed a river called something ….. Do you remember the women standing on the boats? Right after that there was Walking Street, or Magsaysay [I know that's misspelled] Avenue. Walking Street looked somewhat familiar to me, but apart from a few bar entrances, it didn't quite match my memory. I asked someone in Angeles who had been drinking, but I couldn't understand them properly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
That river is called the Kalalake River, and since sewage flowed into it, we also called it the 'Shit River.' It's just outside the main gate of the Subic Bay Naval Base, on the way to Olongapo (Gapo). The woman on the boat was called 'Indei' locally, and she was the one watching over the local kids who would dive into the dirty water to fish out coins that US sailors threw when they were out on liberty. 😢
That's Subic, not Clark.
I think back then it was around 10 pesos to the dollar. Now, another question: what was the liquor that tasted like fruit punch but got people really drunk fast?
Everything changed after Pinatubo erupted.
