What's the best place to get legally married?
From a legal standpoint, what's the best way to get married? Is it better to sign the marriage documents in the Philippines, or in a Western country? Or do I need to do it in several countries? I have dual U.S.-Canadian citizenship.
There is no divorce in the Philippines. If you want to protect your assets, it's better to sign a prenuptial agreement and get married in the US or Canada.
If you marry in the Philippines, there's no divorce, so she can't take half of your assets through divorce. If you marry in the Philippines and she files for annulment to take your money, how would she do it? The online courts don't have jurisdiction in the US. You should consult a lawyer, but in my opinion, it's better to marry in the Philippines. If you marry in the US, she might gain certain rights because it's a US marriage.
For reference, the Philippines will have no-fault divorce as law within a few years (a bill is already in progress). It's likely to apply retroactively, as it did in the West. If your reason for marrying in the Philippines is the belief that you won't be divorced here, think again. PS: Living together for a long time is also a problem. After a certain period, the state considers it a common-law marriage and says you have to give your "wife" half of your assets and things like alimony, just as if you were really married.
Legally speaking, if you're a man... don't get married anywhere in 2026. There's no benefit at all. Date only as long as it's mutually beneficial.
