Went to check out a car from Marketplace — a total waste of time.

A few days ago I went to see a car listed on Marketplace. The windshield was cracked and the paint was in bad shape, but the ad said it had been regularly maintained. No big deal, right? Paint can be redone and a windshield can be swapped.

I'd booked the viewing a week before I actually went, and I told the seller up front that I'd be bringing a mechanic. But when I showed up and said I'd brought a mechanic, the seller acted surprised, as if I hadn't told him directly a week earlier.

Sure enough: heavy rust on the chassis, water instead of coolant, a trunk that had been flooded, a broken spark plug, signs of major bodywork — you name it. The only green light on the checklist was the tire pressure, which honestly made me laugh.

I didn't really need a mechanic to spot all that, but I gave the seller too much benefit of the doubt and assumed it was an honest listing.

The most ridiculous part was how much he was asking compared to the car's condition. It honestly blows my mind. No matter how you look at it, it's not good. Either he was deliberately trying to hook a clueless buyer, or he'd neglected the car so badly he didn't notice any of the problems.

When I told the seller what we'd found, the one thing he pushed back on was that the tires were newer than the mechanic said… Okay, and? That doesn't make every other huge problem with the car go away.

TL;DR: A Marketplace seller listed a car as well cared for with only minor issues, and it turned out he wanted six figures for something that belongs in a junkyard.

Advice please! A bedroom with a 13-foot ceiling, how do I make it feel less empty?

(A loft or bunk bed isn't an option. I already like my bed and I don't need extra floor space.)

I'm a total maximalist, and I really want my room packed with posters, books, and collections. The problem is my room has a really high ceiling. I started putting up posters as far as I could easily reach, then stopped halfway because I felt it would look weird and unbalanced.

If I only decorate the lower part I can reach, I think it'll look unfinished. The bottom half would be packed, while the top stays completely bare. Honestly, with what I know right now, I have no idea how to decorate that high up. 🥹

Any advice or design tips would really help 🙏🏻

I got scammed.

This is a new one. My Filipino fiancée and I were trying to buy a Suzuki S-Presso. The sales manager told us to expect a call from 'the bank'. No call came, but instead we got a text from PNB saying our application was being processed. Okay, fine. Five days later I replied, and got no answer.

I called the linked number too. No one picked up.

We contacted the Suzuki sales manager and were told we weren't eligible because of our age. Then he said he'd resubmit to other banks and that a CI would come to verify where we live. A 'CI' is a credit investigator, who may be a bank employee or someone from an outside company. I don't know Tagalog or Cebuano, so I couldn't follow the conversation my fiancée had with the man who came to verify us. But there was no message or call from any bank, just some guy who knocked on our door and introduced himself as a CI working for East West Bank. Since I'm certain I won't be in the Philippines past February, I decided afterwards not to go ahead with the application. We called this 'CI' to let him know. No answer, just a busy signal. I messaged him three times. No reply. I called a few more times, but all I got was that annoying busy signal you hear when the phone hasn't been hung up properly.

Did I mention we gave him a cash deposit? He told us, or rather my fiancée, that he could speed things up if we paid the down payment before the loan was approved. We got a receipt, and he took a selfie holding the receipt and the cash. There's no bank name or business name on the receipt. My fiancée had taken a photo of his ID, but we had a data problem and reset her phone, assuming the photos were backed up. They weren't. As of writing this, East West has no employee by that name. On top of that, just as we were heading out to tell the dealership we were cancelling, a guy shows up on a motorcycle in a T-shirt, says he's a CI, and wants to talk to my fiancée's niece, who had already lost interest in her own loan application. We're pretty sure our deposit is paying for a nice weekend for these two. I suspect the sales manager, someone at the dealership, or the bank may be in on it. How else could anyone have seen our car loan application? We're posting this so everyone knows this happens.

My family and I are dual US/Philippine citizens moving from Los Angeles to Manila, and we're planning to ship our household belongings in a container, probably a 40-footer.

For those who've done this: which shipping company or freight forwarder did you use, how much did it cost, and would you recommend them?

Did the company handle Philippine customs, or did you hire your own customs broker? I'd also appreciate any customs broker referrals, tips, or unexpected costs to watch out for.
