A Korean restaurant on Nile St in Angeles Korea Town with a wide-ranging menu, from soups and stews to meat, Chinese dishes, and raw fish. After the management of the old "Jungwon" restaurant changed, it took the name "New Jungwon Restaurant," and several Google reviews from 2021–2022 say that from then on it stopped offering all-you-can-eat samgyeopsal (pork belly) and only took à la carte orders. According to a 2023 blog post, it operated briefly elsewhere during renovations and then reopened in a new three-story building on the same site, and reviews keep mentioning that the facilities are cleaner now that the building is new.
The first floor is a main hall, while the second and third floors are split into private rooms and group seating, so it's reportedly popular for family gatherings and company dinners. You can pick from broth dishes like seolleongtang (ox bone soup), wang galbitang (beef short rib soup), dogani-tang (beef knee cartilage soup), haejangguk (hangover soup), and dongtae jjigae (pollock stew), meats like samgyeopsal and dwaeji galbi (pork ribs), Chinese dishes like jjajangmyeon and jjamppong, and even raw fish and sushi, all in one place, so many reviews say it's easy to choose even when everyone in your group wants something different. A big tank at the entrance holds seafood such as flounder, fluke, elephant clams, and king crab, and several reviews say that if you order raw fish, side dishes like dongtae-jeon (pollock pancakes), tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork), and yusanseul (stir-fried seafood and vegetables) keep coming out one after another, making for a generous spread.
The most frequently recommended items are the flounder and fluke sashimi and the elephant clams. The sashimi reportedly comes as a full set, with side dishes followed by maeuntang (spicy fish stew), and reviews keep saying the elephant clams are large and chewy. For a meal, many Google reviews pick out the dongtae-tang (dongtae jjigae), yukjeon (beef pancakes), and the jjamppong, which has a generous portion.
According to the popular times on Google Maps, it's busiest every day from around 6 to 8 p.m., and especially crowded around 7 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Weekday afternoons and late at night after midnight are relatively quiet. Some reviews say side dishes and the sujebi (hand-pulled dough flakes) in the maeuntang vary from day to day and sometimes only come out if you ask, so it's worth requesting them, and others advise checking the price before ordering items sold at market price, like king crab. Reservations and inquiries can be made by phone.
Google Maps lists free parking lot and free street parking, but some reviews say the lot was always full. It's right next to Tarana International Massage, and BONGANE NENGMYUN and the Tourist Police are about 50 m away, Jongno Hospital & Pharmacy about 100 m, Puregold Don Juico Avenue branch about 150 m, and Hotel Snow Angeles about 200 m.
