What do Westerners have against using spoons? Both questions miss the point equally. It's custom. Different country, different custom.

Odd question

I don't think they have a problem with knives... they'd probably have a problem with a silly question, though.

Knives are for opening canned goods and chopping up ice. I see them used all the time.... for that.

Spoons suit the food

What a strange question. Flip it around from a Filipino guy's point of view: he'd wonder why that white lady is eating rice... and peas... with a fork and knife. Try eating sinigang and rice... with a fork and knife. I'm pretty sure you'll be reaching for a spoon. Our way is simpler, more efficient, and above all, it suits our food.

Nothing — read up on Spanish history... During the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines, table knives largely disappeared from dining because the Spanish authorities restricted ordinary people's access to bladed weapons to prevent uprisings. Why Filipinos use a spoon and fork • The weapon ban: The Spanish colonial authorities banned locals from carrying or keeping sharp knives in public or at home to suppress possible rebellions. • The spoon as a knife: Without a dining knife, Filipinos used the side of the spoon against the plate to cut and portion tender meat and vegetables, while the fork held the food in place. • Rice as the staple: A spoon is naturally more efficient for rice-based meals, and rice is still the core of the Filipino diet. • Pre-colonial roots: Before Spanish colonization, many indigenous groups practiced kamayan (eating with bare hands). The spoon-and-fork pairing filled the practical gap left by the lack of Western knives.
