Bubble areas like BGC, IT Park and Megaworld in Iloilo are all PRIVATELY maintained

Keep this in mind when you look at these places or think of them as examples of the Philippines making progress. They're not. Anything the government 'maintains' in 99% of the Philippines looks like trash. Places like BGC and IT Park are just small bubbles privately maintained by Ayala Land and a few other big Philippine companies. So once you step out of these bubbles and back into areas the government maintains, things go downhill fast.

Bangkok, on the other hand, looks good in 95% of its areas. The government there maintains the roads and sidewalks. In other words, it does its job.

I'm bringing this up for the people who come to this sub looking for advice on maybe moving to the Philippines. A lot of them don't realize places like BGC only look nice because they're privately maintained. None of it comes from a functioning government. This matters because bad government can hurt your life in ways you don't understand until you actually live there.

Bangkok comparison

95% of Bangkok feels like Ortigas or the Makati CBD. I mean, it's nice and walkable, but the sidewalks are narrow and blocked in a lot of places. And I wouldn't put BGC and IT Park in the same sentence. IT Park is a big step down from BGC and much smaller

Thanks for the list of great places to move to!

Blame the government?

The fact that cities within the same metro area are completely cut off from each other politically plays a part too. Makati couldn't even build a simple subway because it passed briefly through another city. It makes no sense, but that's how it is. Districts in Bangkok don't fight each other.

Yes, thank goodness Ayala keeps some standards and quality. Without them, who knows what Makati and BGC would look like. I think IT Park in Cebu is theirs too.

Bro, we get it, you like Thailand. Why do you spam this sub every day with the same nonsense? And why should I care who owns the nice areas? The reality is these nice areas beat anything in Bangkok. There's NOTHING like BGC there. So for some people this is enough, and by comparison we can overlook the other downsides. Everything in life is a trade-off.

Who owns it?

BGC and IT Park are co-owned by the BCDA, a government agency... In fact, the BCDA holds a 45% stake in BGC. Googling it wouldn't have been that hard.
