Has anyone here become a Filipino citizen without Filipino ancestry?

Millions of Filipinos have moved abroad and become American, Canadian, European, Australian or Singaporean citizens. Even Japanese.

I was just curious whether anyone here has become a Filipino citizen without using "jus sanguis," meaning reclaiming Filipino citizenship by blood.

We got our quota visa and looked into citizenship. It's a ridiculous process, and you have to give up your nationality. Hard pass.

Not me, but a Swiss friend gave up his Swiss passport to become Filipino.

Remember one major difference: permanent residents are taxed only on Philippine-source income, while Philippine citizens are taxed on worldwide income. Unless your passport is weaker than a Philippine one (rare, but possible), it's objectively not worth it.

I know one person who did it years ago for business reasons. It was a long, complicated process, but he got there in the end. It can be done, but it's probably only worth it if you have a good reason.

I have an investor's visa. I invested money in one of my partner's family companies. It's not citizenship, but it's permanent residency in a way.

Okay, my question is why. What does actual citizenship give a person? In Canada, my ex-wife, the mother of my kids, decided to go for citizenship after her permanent residency. What's the difference? She can get a Canadian passport and she can vote. That's it. I'm not sure what Philippine citizenship gives you, but let's assume it's the same. So now you've got a Philippine passport, you have to pay for visas and have a really hard time traveling the world. Good job. Now you can vote, so you can help vote in the next corrupt administration. Good job. A while back, when I was still just visiting, a friend told me about a Canadian guy who really loved the Philippines and was granted citizenship here. But do you think he travels on that passport? Honestly, I could get a Sudanese passport too. Unless you collect passports, it's worth nothing. People don't want passports from lower-ranked countries. Only higher ones.
