I used to just use the AT&T International Day Pass since I write it off as a business expense. But on my last trip the AT&T signal was bad where I was staying, and since I planned to be there six months, I decided to change things up.
I bought a local Globe eSIM for data and left my physical AT&T SIM in the phone. I turned off international data roaming on the AT&T line and used Wi-Fi Calling whenever I was at the house.
The first month went as expected, but in month two I got hit with the full $120 max: ten day passes at $12 a day, even though I hadn't used any mobile data. Turns out incoming texts triggered the charges, even though I didn't reply to a single one.
I escalated it to AT&T loyalty and management, and the best they'd do was waive 50% of the charges. Their "official solution" was to keep my dual-SIM phone in airplane mode, or call them every single time I wanted to turn roaming on or off.

I was already thinking of switching carriers, and now they've forced my hand. I was only paying $50 a month, which was decent, but I can't trust them anymore.

I use Mint Mobile, and as long as I'm on Wi-Fi using Wi-Fi calling, I can make and take calls with no extra charges. So when I go to the Philippines nothing really changes, and it only costs me $15 a month.

Try the T-Mobile 55+ plan…. You get free international roaming, free Wi-Fi calling and 5GB of international data every billing cycle. I've been on that plan for years living here with no problems…. I usually use Wi-Fi for data, so I stay well under the 5GB cap. If you download the T-Life app, you can track your data usage…. If for some reason you get close to the cap, you can scroll down on that page and buy more data. As long as you stay under the cap, T-Mobile will never give you any trouble……

Why not just get a decent Philippine phone with a Philippine SIM? I use Smart. Then keep your US phone in airplane mode and only use it on Wi-Fi. Make sure it stays in airplane mode with Wi-Fi turned on in settings. Then you can call and text the US unlimited for free. I've done this for years and never had a problem.

I had to dump AT&T. Too many $120 max charges, and they even tried to whack me with a second one when I left and came back in the same month. I eventually switched to Verizon's international plan.

Also, anywhere you are, if you're not in airplane mode, the apps on your phone will still use data every day as long as there's signal.
