Why are there so many older Western men dating young Filipinas in the Philippines?
I've wondered about this for more than four years of living in the Philippines. Interestingly, I saw almost none of it during my eight years in Indonesia. But the Philippines and Thailand seem to be a kind of Disneyland for older guys.
I think there are real reasons on both sides (the older foreigner and the young Filipina), and most of them are more human than some of the cynical answers suggest.
Let me share some of my observations.
From the Western man's side: many are divorced, widowed, or just done with the dating culture back home (honestly, I can't blame them). They're not always after a young trophy and a body (though plenty just want to play) — they're looking for warmth, for someone who actually wants a family and means it. They find Filipina women's attitude toward a woman's role in the family very attractive. The Philippines offers all that in a way that's already rare in Western dating. Some of these men definitely take advantage of the financial gap — it happens all the time. But a lot of them are just lonely men who found a real connection here (whether the woman they chose is truly into them is a whole other story).
From the Filipina's side: the age gap matters much less here than in the West, and the reasons are mostly cultural (not just financial). An older man who's stable, serious and consistent is seen as attractive here, especially since male infidelity and abandonment are extremely common in this country. "Serious and consistent" are the two words Filipinas use most when describing what they want (look at dating app profiles — you'll see). An older Western man often delivers exactly that, and with more maturity than a younger guy who disappears after a few weeks or months.
The financial reality is very real too. The money gap is huge, and some older men exploit it and lead with their wallets. That's a mistake on their part and sooner or later they'll regret it — but that's a whole other topic. Pretending money plays no role would be naive. But let's not reduce every relationship to money alone.
The couples who make it are the ones where both people choose each other — not just what the other represents or the benefits they bring.
