Philippine police form a task force and launch a manhunt over the killing of a 72-year-old American and his 71-year-old Filipina wife

Looks like the Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office (NOrPPO) has set up a special investigation task group, ‘DUELL’, and launched a manhunt over the robbery-homicide of an American man and his Filipina wife at their home in Barangay Bajumpandan early Wednesday.

Acting Negros Oriental provincial director Col. Jonathan Abella is leading the task group, with intelligence, investigation, and crime lab (SOCO) personnel working alongside the Dumaguete City Police Station.

Dumaguete City Police Station chief LtCol. Don Richmond Conag said on Thursday that two persons of interest have been identified, but their identities are being withheld while their involvement is verified, and no arrests have been made yet.

Abella said the task group puts all of NOrPPO's operational, tactical, and forensic resources on this case and vowed, ‘We will leave no stone unturned until the perpetrator is brought to justice.’ Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage, gathering witness statements, and following every lead.

It's definitely way harder to get away with crimes like this in the Philippines. Everybody knows each other and the cities are super small.

Older foreign resident → home intrusion → the foreigner is the main fatality → someone else who knows the household survives Criminals know how soft a target you are at home. Let too many people into your home and you give them enough certainty to make the hit for profit. Keeping a low profile is your first defense, and in most homes your only one. Criminals are starting to recognize soft targets, and I'm noticing the pattern.

Guns & punishment

Guns should be illegal for everyone, like in Singapore, Japan, the UK, and other places where they're really restricted. And punishments for crimes need to go up 10x, so harsh that people don't even think about committing them. Not just in the Philippines, the US needs it too. So many scumbags walk among law-abiding people, then rob and kill them with a stolen $100 gun.
