Things are BAD in the Philippines, and foreigners are now EASY TARGETS

It's really simple. For ordinary Filipinos the price of everything is sky-high and the peso is at a record low, and foreigners are the easy target because we have no legal means of self-defense in the Philippines.

My suggestion to every foreigner in the Philippines right now: dress shabbily. Keep a very low profile. I'm not sure how aware the average foreigner is of how much harder things have gotten for Filipinos. For them, inflation has shot up this year. They were already struggling, and now they've been pushed to the breaking point.

Just a day ago in Dumaguete, three Filipinos broke into a house at night and shot dead an American man and his wife. This isn't an isolated crime. Word has long been out that Dumaguete is a hub for foreigners, and crime against foreigners there has been rising.

This is a time when all expats need to come together. I truly mean it. I don't want any fellow expat getting hurt. And let's also be more considerate of the hardships Filipinos are facing in their own country right now. In my opinion, a smile and simple, positive, friendly gestures go a long way toward building goodwill with a lot of people.

The Philippines wouldn't have this problem if there weren't so much corruption. That's the real problem

I've traveled to 70 countries over 35 years, and I'd say the Philippines isn't particularly bad for a tourist. I think you're fearmongering. Have you looked at the actual data and compared it with other countries? Or are you just reacting to media reports, which are always sensationalist?

I feel safe in my community. I live in the province outside Kabankalan. Pretty much everyone in my barangay is at least someone's second cousin! 😆 There are no strangers here. People look out for each other. Most homes don't lock their doors because there's no crime. Being the only foreigner makes me an oddity here, but by now I'm a known quantity. I wouldn't want to live in Kabankalan proper, though. Too many stares! Most people are friendly, but some aren't. I think if you're going to live in the Philippines as a foreigner, you should either live in a small community like mine (people look out for our family just like we look out for theirs), or somewhere like a high-rise in BGC, in a bubble surrounded by armed security. That's just my opinion. It doesn't matter how you dress. If you're a white guy in the Philippines, you're going to attract attention in most places.

Stop fearmongering. It's the same today as it ever was, if not better. The only difference is that you actually see and hear about more of it now because of the internet and social media. You could say the same about Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam... there have been plenty of recent cases there too.

Dressing down won't help

You could look like a homeless person, but in many people's eyes foreigner = cash. Dressing shabbily only goes so far

You've summed up how I've lived here for the past 20 years: stay sharp about everything, there are eyes on you 24/7/365, and I've never had a problem. BUT it's not getting better anywhere in the world, so I'm staying here.
