I've been living in the Philippines for 4 years now, and I really felt like I needed to share this. I see posts and comments on forums here all the time saying "Never date a single mom in the Philippines," but in reality, it's not a black-and-white issue.
I've dated a few single moms in Manila and Cebu. It can turn out to be a really rewarding relationship, or it can be a "never again" experience straight out of the horror stories you see online. Both are possible.
I think you first need to understand the background. One in four Filipino women—over 14 million of them—are single moms. There is no divorce here, child support is rarely paid properly, and men often just disappear or turn abusive. These women didn't choose to be single moms; the system and the men failed them. That doesn't mean every single one of them is a good person, but writing them all off with a "never" means missing out on a lot and isn't fair.
I also see a lot of complaints like "the kids always come first"... but what parent in the world doesn't do that? The guys I know who are in successful relationships just accepted that and adapted. In my experience, the moment I showed that I accepted those kids, she treated me like the most important man in the world. In Filipino culture, you practically become family the moment you start dating, so it's not even about a "who comes first" struggle.
The most important things I looked for were her values, what she genuinely wanted, and whether her words matched her actions. I always try to keep this in mind:
"A single mom who worked two jobs for two years just to feed her kids and never asked me for anything is completely different from a woman whose first question is about my income (which you see a lot on dating apps)."
Bad experiences are real too, I'm sure of that. Still, I hope people look at what kind of woman she is beyond the "single mom" label. There are plenty of men living very happily with single moms and their kids. I hope this post helps provide a little balance.
