Driving along the road by the Abacan River in Angeles, I saw the slums and then came to a fork in the road, so I turned off the Abacan River road. My friend asked if I wanted to walk around here or go somewhere else. I chose to walk and got out of the car, following the fork. For the first 50 meters, it was an overwhelming slum...
I was scared to go any further...
But I gathered my courage and walked further, and like magic, the slum disappeared, and a village of standardized two-story houses appeared.
It didn't look like a slum at all. What was going on??
As I kept walking, I found a basketball court and a sari-sari store that surprisingly had a freezer. I asked how much the ice cream was, and they said 5 pesos (125 won) and 10 pesos (250 won). The 5-peso ones looked too cheap, so I decided to buy 10-peso ice cream for the kids.
I roughly counted the kids gathered at the basketball court, and there were about fifteen. I told the lady, "Everybody come here, ice cream, give," and she understood, called the kids over, and gave them one each.
There weren't clearly more than twenty of them, but somehow the ice cream count went over 30 lol. Pinoys are so fast... In an instant, not just the kids at the basketball court, but all the kids in the neighborhood started gathering. Some of them came back for a second one, but I pretended not to notice, thinking about how much they must have wanted it. Location and video attached.
